Prior Written Notice
Prior written notice is a written explanation from the school about certain actions it proposes or refuses related to a student’s special education program or services.
Families may hear decisions in a meeting but still need to understand what the school is proposing or refusing and why. Prior written notice can be part of that documentation trail.
This term is legal-adjacent. The purpose of this entry is to help caregivers recognize the concept and ask clearer questions, not to determine whether a specific school has met its legal obligations.
